Department of Social Work

The Teaching and training programmes on Social Works offered by NISWASS covers a comprehensive and pragmatic aspects and facts gathered during the past over three decades. The programme is affiliated to the Utkal University, Bhubaneswar and is also duly recognised by the University Grants Commission under the UGC Act.

Masters in Social Work (MSW)

A comprehensive study course is designed by NISWASS for a Master's Degree in Social Work and was instituted in the Utkal University. The annual strength has been fixed at 24 for the time being and programme covers a period of two years. Candidates hail from Science, Humanities, Commerce as well as Social Work streams are eligible for this programme.

Bachelors in Social Work (BSW)

NISWASS initiated the Bachelors in Social Work (BSW) programme in Social Work in Phulbani, Sundargarh and Bhubaneswar. Apart from Bhubaneswar, the Colleges situated in Phulbani and Sundargarh are two other branches of NISWASS and are affiliated to the Utkal University. As a part of decentralisation procedure, the set ups in Phulbani and Sundargarh will have their registration and affiliated to the respective universities.

The duration of the course is three years. The annual intake strength for BSW is 60 and the course along with classroom curriculum, contains field work in the villages and among the weaker communities of the area. Seminars, workshops, rural camps and study visits are part of the regular curriculum.

Grassroots Social Work (GSW)

NISWASS too offers a unique programme for self-employed social workers as a plan to take its training facility to grassroot level of Social Work. The trainees are being designated as Barefoot or Grassroot Social Workers. The Programme is meant to develop the social work skills for Self-Employment. The programme is identified as diplomas/certificates type. Certificate is issued to trainees after the completion of the course, the duration of which is about 4-6 months.
