The Department of Social History, Philosophy and Buddhist Studies unite the social history, philosophy and the ideologies of none other than Goutam Buddha under one roof. The mission of this discipline is to offer many-sided knowledge about the structures and different aspects of the society with a tinge touch of philosophy on Buddhism and about the interdependence and the interaction of social phenomena in time with the latter two. The Department emphasizes and incorporates ‘Social History’ and ‘Social Philosophy’ as a major component of its course curriculum.
TEACHING
The subject of Social History has somewhat been neglected by over- emphasis being given to the Political History of this country, to recorded history than to oral history, to mainstream history than history that deals with the substreams or even those that go against the current. This Department, therefore, has decided to conduct teaching, research and studies as well as introduce social history as a subject in the Institute. The Department also tries to promote social philosophy as part of its programme, with social change as its top agenda item.
The Master's Course on Social Philosophy and Buddhist studies is affiliated to the Utkal University of Culture. NISWASS has already conducting the course subject study tours and Buddhist sites visits are a part of the teaching programme. The students are required to submit their other own reports after such tours and on the spot-studies. |
