The Situation of Drought in Orissa (1987)
During 1987, five districts were very badly affected by drought. This study was conducted with the broad objective of assessing the nature and extent of drought situation and its impact on the poor.

Study on the Harvesting, Benefits Sharing and Modes and Distribution of Products and Benefits under the Social Forestry Scheme

Social Forestry Programme is being implemented by the State Government in 3,000 villages to meet the growing needs of fuel, fodder, timber and other forest products. NISWASS investigated and analysed various facets of the Social Forestry Programme.

Study on the Adverse Effects of Development Work (Flood Embankments) and the Social Cost Benefit Analysis

Unplanned and indiscriminate construction and location of development work, especially of rail and road embankments, along with the illegal yet unavoidable encroachments resulting from population explosion and underdeveloped drainage system aggravate the flood problems and other related problems in a given area. The study suggested ways and means of minimising the adverse effects of development programmes.

SOCIAL Action and extension

In the Second Year, as part of their field work assignment, the students will be sent for placement in any disaster-prone/affected areas of Orissa, viz., cyclone, flood, drought, accident, massacre, riots, break of epidemics, family crisis. Wherein each student will be required to identify the socio-economic and demographic characteristics of the target group and the nature of disaster-relief activities which may have been in operation at the time of the strike of the disaster in the past in that very area and the possible gaps, constraints and problems of such operations.
