RATIONALE

NISWASS has a DISASTER PREPAREDNESS AND ENVIRONMENT MANAGEMENT department, which conducts trainings on disaster preparedness and environmental management.
The State of Orissa experiences frequent recurrence of natural disasters like drought, floods, famine, cyclone, etc. There is, therefore, the need to create, strengthen and expand the capability for disaster preparedness and management in the State. NISWASS has been undertaking training, research and action in the area of disaster management.  NISWASS has undertaken various research programmes in the past on situation of drought, forest protection and effects of floods. It has been implementing various education programmes on social forestry and allied activities including environment sanitation in the State.

teaching and Training

NISWASS has designated a comprehensive syllabus for teaching at the Master's level. The course has already been submitted to the Utkal University for Institution and approval so that NISWASS can start teaching in its Institute.
The Course of M.A. in Disaster Preparedness and Environment Management is a full time two years’ teaching and training programme aimed at preparing the manpower required for augmenting the Country’s state of preparedness towards disaster with particular reference to the needs of ensuring protection of human lives and material resources and mitigating the effects of the disaster.

Here follows the salient feature of the course:

    • Develop an understanding of why and how the modern disaster manager is involved with pre-disaster and post disaster activities.
    • To associate key personnel/specialists related to disaster preparedness management.
    • Develop an awareness of the chronological phases of natural disaster response and understand the key concepts such as (a) disaster management related to development, and (b) the relationship of different disaster management activities to the appropriate state of mitigation.
    • Identify the organisations that are involved in natural disaster assistance and relate the victims to assistance modes.
