Department of Social communication

Research in the field of Social Communication has mostly been applied and focused mainly on the processes and effects of Communication. Some of the major Research Studies that the department has produced include the 'Radio for reaching the Deprived' and 'Science and Technology Communication for tribal. Besides, The students of Social Communication undertake research in various fields of Communication, Journalism, Public Relations and Folk Media.

Action

Communicative action programme as in the past consists of interpersonal communication with the people, conducting work-shops, exhibitions, group-discussions and entertainment measures like skits and folk dances.
The department has an elaborate-system for imparting practical training to the students. In the first-year of the curriculum the students are placed in various communities in order to get a first hand exposure of the different conditions prevalent in different media organisations.

Advocacy and campaign

A number of seminars and workshops are organised by the Department. Deliberations in the seminar are focussed on the Major sub-themes viz sustainable human development and role of media, role of media in women and child development, tribal and dalit aspirations, human development concerns etc.

Janavani: the Voice of the People

This daily newspaper in Oriya language is extensively used by the Post Graduate students of Social Communication and Journalism for the purpose of journalistic practices. A note on this unique social and rural daily of the country would be of relevance here

THE FOURTH WORLD: The Journal of the marginalized people

Aims and Objectives


The Fourth World aims at highlighting the worldly plight, problems and prospects of the marginalized, the deprived and the depressed people in India and elsewhere.
Theoretical and pragmatic considerations impinging on the publication of the Fourth World, NISWASS seeks through it to

  1. Promote the understanding and appreciation of culture, as well as social, economic, and political reality in the Fourth World;
  2. Encourage serious debate among intellectuals, political leaders, administrators and activists about the appreciation of the problems faced by the people of the Fourth World;
  3. Analyze the factors that help or hinder the upliftment and progress of the people of the Fourth World ;
  4. Report experiments in India and elsewhere undertaken to help the people of the Fourth World overcome their disabilities; and
  5. Encourage self-analysis and self-understanding among the intellectuals and activists of the Fourth World.

The Fourth World appears biannually in April and October every year and brings into sharp focus the various aspects of the existence of the poor and the marginalized people the world over, in general, and in India, in particular. The journal is completing its thirteenth year and contains valuable articles of interest for the marginalized section of the society.

Alliances and Networking

The department of Social Communication is actively seeking alliances with different organizations, working in the field of development communication. In the past few years the FES and AMIC-India have supported different endeavors set up by the department viz. the training of grassroots Journalist and more recently the seminars on, Media and Democracy, and Media and Human Development in Orissa, .
The Social-Communication Alumuni association has been activated. The members of this association apart from maintaining programme related contact with the department, congregate annually to discuss common problems and prospects.

K.R. Narayanan Chair

The K.R. Narayanan Chair was established in the year 1996 by Mr. Eugene M. Lang, Chairman of the 'I have a dream foundation', New York and a close friend of the late President of India, Sri K.R. Narayanan.
